Bio-memory and Bio-communication

October 17, 2002
Sonobe Laboratory

On October 17 2002, Sonobe laboratory (http://sonobe.s5.xrea.com/index_eng.html) announces that we have completed design of "Bio-memory and Bio-communication".
Bio-memory is a super-high density information recording system (or storage). The technology utilizes bio-macromolecules as record medium.
Bio-communication is a communication system, appropriate for long-range such as hundreds or thouthands of years. The technology utilizes bio-macromolecules as communication medium.

On the same day, we have submitted a patent application of

"An information communication method, an information record method, an encoder and a decoder, utilizing bio-macromolecules for communication medium or record medium"

to Japanese Patent Office (JPO), numbered "patent application 2002-302455".

Although it is known that a large amount of information is packed in narrow space in the "biopolymer" (or, biomacromolecule) such as DNA or protein, the information is expressed by "language" which is specific to living things.

By our novel technology, any kind of texts and data, inputted from computer, are "translated" to "language" of DNA and protein. According to the language, biopolymer(s) is/are synthesized chemically by a synthesizer.
For example, many short fragments of DNA or protein are synthesized.
Data are divided into blocks, numbered, and embedded in them.
The biopolymer is used as memory medium and communication medium.

The biopolymer can also be "made alive" and be "increased" after recombination in some living thing by biotechnology.

At the read side, a sequencer (or a sequence reader) analyzes the biopolymer, "translate reversely" from the language of DNA or protein, and reconstruct the texts or data.

The experiment demonstrated the correct reconstruction. In the experiment, sample sentences are converted into biological sequences by an encoder program, and are processed by a decoder program directly, bypassing the biopolymer synthesizing and sequencing.

The information density of the biopolymer is quite astonishing.
According to our calculation, the information quantity of 200 million reels of the 2,400 feet magnetic tapes, which are used at companies in the world, is approximately equal to the information quantity contained in nucleic acid of bacteria packed in about 0.1 inch cube.

Bio-memory is suitable for recording of:
documents, transaction data, multimedia data, large-scale database, programs, scripts, log files, broadcast record, WEB documents, screen dumps, experiment data, observation data, biological data, simulation result, and so on.

The "language" of life has kept for several hundred million years, and would not change in hundreds or thousands of years from now, so the bio-communication is very excellent in respect of the stability of medium standard.
Therefore, bio-communication is suitable for time capsule and for information communication to descendant generation.
Bio-communication is also available for highly secure communication, and for indicator, identification or experiment-related information, attached to living things, such as recombinant living things.
